Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful, burning rash. The rash occurs as red, dark pink, dark brown, or purplish depending on skin tone

1 in 3 people develop shingles in their lifetime. It is much more common in older patients.
What causes shingles?
Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Even after the chickenpox infection is over, the virus remains dormant in your nervous system for years before reactivating as shingles.
