What is ringworm?

Ringworm is a highly contagious infection of the skin by fungus that feeds on dead cells and hair of the body. It can infect the scalp, hand, foot, buttock, groin etc.

How common is ringworm?

Studies show that up to 25% of the global population can be infected with ringworm at any given time.

What causes ringworm?

Ringworm is caused by a group of fungi known as Dermatophytes. These fungi are found in moist areas as well as on pets and farm animals and are introduced onto the skin through unhygienic means. They also exist on contaminated towels, untreated bathing water and personal articles. Therefore, coming into contact with infected surfaces, items, or animals increases your risk of getting this rash.

What can I do to prevent ringworm?

Avoid sharing personal articles like towel, comb, hairbrush  Avoid direct contact with an infected person Avoid wearing wet footwear

What are symptoms of ringworm?

The main symptom of ringworm is itchiness. The appearance of ringworm depends on the area of the body affected: Ringworm of the skin (Tinea Corporis) appears as an oval rash that has a clear and smooth center with its edges having a scaly feel. Skin around the ringworm can sometimes become excessively dry and shed flakes of dead skin. Occasionally, one may experience hair loss at the affected area.  Ringworm of the scalp (Tinea Capitis) appears as a patch or patches of hair loss with a rash that appears thickened and scaly. There can be an associated dandruff that occurs with the rash. Ringworm of the foot (Tinea Pedis) appears as scaly rash between the toes and soles of the foot. The skin around the rash becomes excessively dry and sheds flakes of dead skin. Occasionally, it may spread to infect the toe nails. Ringworm of the groin (Tinea Cruris) appears a patch of an oval rash in the inner thigh that has a clear and smooth center with its edges having a scaly feel. Occasionally, one may experience pain at the affected area.  Ringworm of the beard (Tinea Barbae) appears as a patch or patches of scaly rash usually around the beard area. The skin around the rash becomes excessively dry and sheds flakes of dead skin. One may experience loss of beard hair.

What are treatments for ringworm?

Treating ringworm requires the use of antifungal medications which may be taken by mouth or applied to the rash. In some cases, a combination of both options is done. Treatment of Ringworm can take weeks hence it is important to exercise patience during the period of therapy.
