What is nail infection?
Nail Infection is a common medical condition caused by invasion of the nail plate and surrounding tissue by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi or viruses. Nail infection affects both genders. However, nail infections are more common in women while toenail infections are common in men. The microorganisms get introduced into the skin surrounding the nail or the nail plate through activities that cause breaks in the skin such as manicure, pedicure, biting of nails, household chores etc. These microorganisms after invading the nail and surrounding tissue, multiply and cause infections.
How common is nail infection?
A study revealed that about 4% of Ghanaians suffer from serious fungal infections yearly, with over 35,000 affected by life-threatening invasive fungal infections.
What causes nail infection?
Bacterial - The bacteria Staphylococcus and Streptococcus are the most common culprits. These bacteria are usually found on the skin or within the environment. Fungus - Infections are caused by a group of fungi known as Dermatophytes. These fungi are usually found in wet and moist environment and can contaminate the nail bed through regular exposure of the nail to this environment
What can I do to prevent nail infection?
Keep your nails and fingers dry Avoid biting nails and wearing hangnails Avoid tight footwear
What are symptoms of nail infection?
Symptoms will depend on the organism causing the infection. Bacterial Infections usually present with pain, reddening, swelling, and discharge of pus from the infected nail. Fungal infections present with a change in the colour and deformity of the nail. In severe cases, the nail may fall off.
What are treatments for nail infection?
Treating nail infections involves use of specific antibiotics or antifungals proven to penetrate the nail bed. Pain killers may be prescribed in cases that present with pain. Without appropriate treatment, nail infections may lead to permanent destruction of the nail as well as infection of the hands.
