What is genital rash?
A genital rash is a skin condition that is characterized by a change in texture and colour of the skin around the genital area (penis, scrotum, vulva, anus). The appearance of genital rashes varies depending on the underlying cause. They may or may not be sexually transmitted. Genital rashes may appear as small bumpy eruptions that could contain fluids, bumpy and fleshy, or bumpy and scaly. Rashes may be accompanied with pain, itch and reddening of the affected skin. Genital rashes appear as a warning sign to a problem with the skin or an infection.

Depending on the cause, genital rash can vary in appearance. Features of the rash such as the shape, reddening of the affected skin, nature of bumps or the distribution of the rash can help in determining the diagnosis: A painless sore (or chancre) around the genitals may be suggestive of primary syphilis An itchy and painful rash that appears in clusters and is fluid filled, may be genital herpes A patch of rash that is itchy and appears scaly may be ringworm (tinea cruris) A fleshy and bumpy rash that appears like cauliflower may be genital warts Tiny and very itchy rashes that look like insect bites may be scabies

Genital rashes, depending on the underlying cause, require treatment with topical medicals and in some cases systemic medications. Though not all genital rashes are sexually transmitted, it is advised that one stays away from sexual intercourse during the period of therapy.
