Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are infections from microorganisms that are transmitted from an infected party through sexual activity of any form. There are several microorganisms that cause STIs. The commonest STIs are Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Genital Herpes.

The WHO has estimated that every year in Africa there are 3.5 million cases of syphilis, 15 million cases of chlamydial disease, 16 million cases of gonorrhea, and 30 million cases of trichomoniasis.

Sexually transmitted infections are treatable using antibiotics or antiviral medications depending on the underlying cause. Treatment of STIs take, on average, about a week. However, some resistant strains of bacteria may require further testing and change of medications to treat. It is important to avoid sex during the period of therapy and to make sure your partner(s) get tested.
