Herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) passed on through vaginal, anal and oral sex. There are 2 types of Herpes, oral and genital. Both are caused by viruses and are quite common.

What causes herpes?

Oral herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Genital herpes can be caused either by HSV-1 or HSV-2. Oral herpes occurs when one makes contact with the virus that can be present in herpes lesions or saliva, or on the mouth. Transmission can happen during close contact, such as kissing or sharing personal items, such as lipstick or cutlery. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and can be transmitted to the mouth through oral sex.

Regular screening for STI Regular condom use during peno-vaginal and oral sex

What are symptoms of herpes?

Examples of symptoms include: small blisters that burst to leave red, open sores around your genitals, anus, thighs – the sores may be less red on brown or black skin tingling, burning or itching around your genitals pain when you pee discharge that is not usual for you
