What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is a condition where attaining or sustaining a firm erection seems almost impossible despite adequate sexual stimulation. This is usually common in men over 40 years. To erect and sustain an erection, there is an interplay between the brain, blood vessels that take blood to the penis and also nerves that stimulate the penis. When there is a problem with any of these, achieving or sustaining erections becomes difficult.
How common is erectile dysfunction?
Over 80% of men who started treatment for their Erectile Dysfunction have had successful outcomes and a quality sexual life.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
Medical conditions that affect blood supply to the penis eg Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Failure, Psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, stress from relationships Some medications used in the management of Hypertension and Depression Substance Abuse eg Alcohol, Tobacco, Sedentary Lifestyle Anatomical Problems of the penis
What can I do to prevent erectile dysfunction?
Cut down on alcohol intake Cease smoking Engage in 20-30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week
What are symptoms of erectile dysfunction?
The main symptom of Erectile Dysfunction is being unable to achieve or sustain an erection for sexual intercourse. Erectile Dysfunction can however be associated with some symptoms such as low libido, premature ejaculation, and depression.
What are treatments for erectile dysfunction?
Most cases of Erectile Dysfunction can be treated with a medication that improves blood flow to your penis, lifestyle modification (ie cutting down on alcohol, increasing exercises) as well as psychological techniques. In cases where nerves around the pelvis are damaged, medications are not beneficial.
