What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation of the skin is a common condition that occurs as a darkening of an area of skin compared to one’s normal skin colour. It is usually caused by overproduction and deposition of a skin pigment known as melanin. Melanin is responsible for the colour our skin, hair and eyes and protects skin cells from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light from the sun

What can I do to prevent hyperpigmentation?

  • Use sunscreen when you anticipate long exposure to sunlight

  • Avoid abusing steroids and other skin bleaching products
