What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria and transmitted through unprotected sex (sex without a condom) and is particularly common in sexually active teenagers and young adults.

What causes chlamydia?

Chlamydia is caused by a specific strain of bacteria known as Chlamydia trachomatis. It is transmitted through vaginal discharge or semen, and can be transmitted through genital contact or oral, vaginal, or anal sex without a barrier method, like a condom.
